William Lanouette, a writer and public policy analyst, has studied and
written about nuclear weapons and nuclear power for more than 30 years. He
is the author of Genius in the Shadows: A Biography of Leo Szilard, The Man
Behind the Bomb (University of Chicago Press ,1994). He holds an A.B. in
English from Fordham College and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Politics from the
London School of Economics (Univ. of London). A staff member for Newsweek
and National Journal, and Washington Correspondent for The Bulletin of the
Atomic Scientists, he has also written articles for Arms Control Today, The
Atlantic Monthly, The Economist, The Energy Daily, Scientific American,
Smithsonian, The Washington Post , and The Wilson Quarterly. Since 1991 he
has been a Senior Policy Analyst for energy and science issues at the U.S.
