Uranium MUF

Tuwaitha

October 1997 report, Table 1.1, p. 34: Receipts into Tuwaitha uranium projects = 14,789 kg/U; Adjusted material unaccounted for = 1,086 kg/U

This MUF "not considered to be unreasonable" -- p. 32

Al Jesira uranium conversion facility

October 1997 report, p. 29, section 1.1.4: "This difference has been investigated in detail and it is estimated that 10,140 kg uranium can be accepted to be present in waste products and damaged plant components, leaving 1,765 kg uranium unaccounted for."

Total MUF

October 1997 report, p. 33, section 1.1.6: "The total amount of material unaccounted for, potentially arising from normal process losses taken together with the circumstantial losses referred to above, is determined to be just less than 3,000 kg natural uranium which is equivalent to 1.5% of the non-static inventory."

The MUF issue is not mentioned in subsequent IAEA reports.

Are these MUF's suspiciously high, despite the inefficient nature of the Iraqi enrichment technologies and facility damage during the war?

Total amount of enriched U produced by calutrons (EMIS)

October 1997 report, p. 36, sec. 1.2.1: "Iraq's declaration of the total enriched uranium produced at Al Tarmiya as some 685 grams at an average enrichment of 3% is equivalent to only about 20% of design, both in terms of mass and enrichment, but is not inconsistent with the reduced performance that might be expected during commissioning."

This issue is not mentioned in subsequent IAEA reports.

Is it realistic to assume that the calutrons operated at only about 20% capacity?
