16 May 1996
Dear Mr. Leventhal:
Thank you for your letter of 5 April 1996 regarding the outcome of the Special Consultative Meeting (SCM) of entities involved in the maritime transport of materials subject to the INF Code. Although members of the Secretariat have been in contact with you since receiving your letter, I am writing to note that we are providing documents recently prepared which also address the SCM. In addition, I am pleased to report that a draft of the proceedings of the SCM, including transcripts of questions, answers and comments, has recently been completed. This rather voluminous package (619 pages) will be provided to you separately.
As you requested, we have provided copies of your letter to the Chairmen of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) and the SCM. The outcome of the SCM and related issues are on the agenda for upcoming meetings of both committees.
In conclusion, I want to thank you for the active participation of the Nuclear Control Institute in the SCM. The presentations by Dr. Lyman and Professor Van Dyke were comprehensive, well prepared and contributed to our objective of a full and open discussion of all aspects of the carraige of material subject to the INF Code.
Yours sincerely,
(signed)
W.A. O'Neill
Secretary-General
